HMC response to Sir David Bell’s speech: Political interference ‘damaging schools’

The HMC, which represents the UK's leading independent schools, today fully backed Sir David Bell's views. Their Chair Richard Harman, Headmaster of Uppingham School, said:

"All schools  - independent and state maintained – want less political interference in teaching and the running of schools. Not only do most political interventions fail to become established but they lead to a constant barrage of poorly thought-through measures.

“Independent schools have long believed that all pupils need education to as removed as possible from micro-management by government and for a properly professionalised body of teachers and school leaders to be far more influential in education policy-making.

"We know how and what to teach. We spend far too much time ensuring quality and consistency for our students in the face of endless political meddling and rushed reforms.”
