SIR – All too often, stories in the media about independent schools are illustrated with a photo of Etonians. This stereotype promulgates the continuing myth that all independent schools are like Eton.
There is a huge variety of schools in the private sector, ranging from inner-city day schools to rural boarding schools. These institutions are not bastions of wealth and privilege; on a daily basis we work to honour our charitable roots in helping the less affluent either through bursary support or working with state partners.
Eton does this too, but to represent the sector constantly with this one school is tiresome.
