Many heads are better than one

In his blog, 06/01/15, HMC member Mike Buchanan, Headmaster of Ashford School announces the launch of the 14Group of  schools in the South East to show how collaboration can benefit our pupils and staff.

Together with my fellow Heads, I am today launching the 14Group consisting of 22 schools covering Surrey/Sussex/Kent/Essex (spot the exception to the rule) where the Head is in HMC as a member or associate. These are leading state maintained and independent schools in the South East.

The founder members of the 14Group are:

Roedean School, Ashford School, Worth School, St John’s School (Leatherhead), Eastbourne College, Elizabeth College (Guernsey), Kent College (Canterbury), Kent College (Pembury), Bedes School, Hurstpierpoint College, St Edmund’s School (Canterbury), Lancing College, Epsom College, Cranleigh School, St Lawrence College, the King’s School (Rochester), Royal Alexandra & Albert School, Sutton Valence Schoolthe Judd School, Benenden School, New Hall School, Reigate Grammar School.

The 14Group is an informal grouping of likeminded schools with the purpose of connecting people in similar roles across our schools for professional dialogue, challenge and support. This is to be achieved through an annual meeting hosted by one of the schools and, perhaps, a group email or social network. In 2014/15, we expect to convene meetings for Deputy Heads, Directors of Study or equivalents, Heads of Science, Heads of English, Heads of Maths. If there is an appetite, this will be extended to Heads of Boarding, Sixth Form, Junior Schools, EYFS etc.

This is an important step in providing links with colleagues in other leading schools across the South East and will bring direct benefits to the pupils in our schools. It sits well with Ashford School being a National Teaching School and so wishing to connect teachers across the region.
