New Headmaster appointed at Woodhouse Grove School

I am delighted to be able to inform you that after a thorough recruitment exercise the next Headmaster of Woodhouse Grove School is Mr James Lockwood MA.

Mr Lockwood is currently Headmaster at another HMC school, the Royal Hospital School near Ipswich. He joined the Royal Hospital School in September 2009 as Deputy Headmaster from a senior management position at St John’s School, Leatherhead and in 2012 was promoted to his current headship. He was educated at Woodhouse Grove School where he was Head Prefect and Captain of Rugby. Having completed an Honours degree in Manchester, he went on to gain an MA with distinction in Education Management at the University of Surrey. James started his teaching career at Exeter School where he was a Deputy Housemaster and Master i/c Cricket, then he spent ten years at St John’s School, Leatherhead, during which time he led an academic department, was Housemaster of a boys’ boarding house, Master i/c Rugby and, latterly, a member of the school’s senior management team, with specific responsibility for the co-curricular life of the school.

Before taking up the headship at Woodhouse Grove, James will be involved in appropriate induction to ensure a smooth transition. There will be a number of occasions when James will be in school to meet staff and to start the process of meeting pupils and parents. He will take up the post from 1st January 2016. For the Autumn Term 2015 I am delighted to confirm that David Wood will be Acting Head, ably supported by the current senior team and especially Keith Jones as Second Master (i/c routines, discipline and pastoral care) and Ed Wright as Assistant Head (Director of Teaching & Learning with an overall responsibility for the school’s academic life and progress). Although David Humphreys takes up his new position formally in September he will have a continuing role in the Methodist Schools Trust for all Methodist Schools and will thus offer positive and appropriate support for the team at Woodhouse Grove both from September and henceforward.

My fellow Governors and I are excited at the prospect of the new and dynamic leadership James Lockwood will bring to the whole school community. He has all the experience, ambition and vision to take the school forward. I am sure that as you get to know him you will agree! We look forward to welcoming James, his wife Sarah and their two young children, Olivia and Harry to the Grove where I am sure they will receive a great welcome.
