Private schools plan network of state sixth forms

PRIVATE schools are planning a national chain of selective state sixth-form colleges to enable bright inner-city pupils to win places at leading universities.

The plan is based on the London Academy of Excellence (LAE), which will open this autumn, under the government’s free schools programme, in Newham, in the east of the capital.

Its curriculum will be managed by eight private schools in the southeast including Brighton college and Eton as well as Highgate and King’s college schools in London.
