Times letter: Guidance about time spent online needed in time of mounting teenage depression

The Times, 23.08.16

Sir, Although the number of middle-class girls suffering from anxiety or depression is increasing, girls already outnumber boys in higher education. This trend, if it continues, will force us to ask what these contradictory facts tell us about our expectations of both sexes, and how they interpret the messages adults communicate to them.

The government should of course continue to work with the internet giants to create a more benign environment, but parents and schools can do a lot: we have to lay down guidelines about “online time” — and then enforce them.
