+ 1 period: adding value to sixth form private study

Read more about this project in the HMC publication "Independent and Innovative" (John Catt Educational Limited, 2006)

Project description

The +1 departmental private study period was introduced with the aim of extending AS subject contact time with directed use of L6th private study, supervised and directed within departments.

Each AS subject is allocated 8 periods in the timetable. One period is allocated as the +1 period. This is not a teaching period. It is a departmental private study period that is an opportunity to do the following:

  • Student independent working
  • Teacher one-to-one support
  • Student appraisal
  • Study skills development
  • Library research work
  • Study of non-syllabus texts and articles
  • Differentiated work -advanced work/research/reading or support
  • Use of departmental resources

Benefits

Teachers have been able to do more individual support and appraisal work with our L6th students. Students have found it helpful for support and study guidance. The additional period has made better use of private study time without removing the opportunity for independent working. It also enables us to break out from the restrictions of the syllabus: one, ring-fenced, lesson each week to look beyond the near horizon.
