Biometric registration

Project description

In September 2004 we introduced registration by 'thumbprint' using a system devised by our Network Services Manager. A year later he had left; set up his own company and his system is being used by more and more schools. The system, with supporting software, offers:-

  • Real time registration - we knew which boys were registering; where and when. This enabled us to look at access to the school site; provision of early morning facilities; problems with specific late buses etc., on all of which we had no information previously.
  • Correct identity. Fingerprints, unlike swipe cards, are never lost and can't be swapped.
  • Pupil centred registration allowing more time for pastoral care.
  • Sophisticated software that was developed during the first 6 months to provide us with a reporting system that fitted every need.
  • System accessible all over the school. Staff can check on any boy's absence anywhere at any time.
  • Obvious extensions, especially to our dining room; to our library which still operates a 'card system' and finally as access to buildings - getting rid of horrible digi-locks. We have their fingerprints, let's use them!

Benefits

Efficient - Time-saving - Flexible

  • The staff love it - no horrible registers to complete; no OMR sheets to fill in - just an easy to use computer programme.
  • The pupils love it - our children of today expect such technology.
