The Chigwell Open Junior Art and Design Exhibition has
been an annual event since 1999. It is an 'open' exhibition
in every sense; maintained and independent schools are invited
to submit up to six pieces of work, without restrictions
on size or medium. So far we have succeeded in exhibiting
every piece submitted. There is no theme to the exhibition,
or prizes; its aims are to celebrate the achievements of
young people and their teachers. All the two-dimensional
exhibits are framed, giving the exhibition a uniform and
professional appearance. The majority of junior schools
probably do not have dedicated exhibition areas, and it
is delightful to see the joy on the artists' faces when
they attend the exhibition reception and to share the pleasure
of their families and schools.
What makes this exhibition distinctive is that the Junior
School section of the art and design department organises
and hosts an InSET day for for the KS1 and 2 art co-ordinators
and teachers of the schools who have contributed work to
the exhibition. These skill-based sessions are led by a
practising artist or designer, with the aim of developing
the skills of the teachers in planning and implementing
the art curriculum. The sessions are consistently oversubscribed;
that they are non-profit making is a contributing factor.
Participant feedback is consistently very positive.
