Curriculum development

A development in bilingual provision and teaching

Project description

The provision of a French-English stream in years 9 and 10, French quatrième and troisième, known as the Lycée Stream, introduced in 2006.

Lessons are delivered in English for: English, Sciences, RS, Art, Classics, and a further modern language. Pupils follow the school's standard year 9 curriculum and are incorporated into classes with mainstream pupils.

Lessons are delivered in French for: French, Maths, History, Geography and PSHE/Civics. The curriculum is directed towards le diplôme national du brevet (DNB) and validated by a French Lycée. Pupils will take the brevet examinations at the end of the troisième year, thus qualifying for entrance, if required, into a Lycée for the programme de seconde (year 11). Alternatively, pupils can stay within the English system and take a limited GCSE programme.

A development of this scheme in 2008 is likely to enhance the bilingual provision in year 9, the quatrième, but not offer the troisième. Instead, pupils will either opt fully into the GCSE programme or return to France to complete le diplôme national du brevet.

This project builds upon existing connections with France and the French market. It also helps to support a local Prep School which teaches pupils French curriculum in years 7 and 8 (French 6e and 5e). We already have a significant number of bilingual French/English within the school. We also have French members of staff.

Benefits

As above in terms of potential market value, plus the enhancement of the European dimension across the school: it encourages Anglo-French dialogue and positive relations.
