Becoming an all IB Diploma sixth form

Project description

In March 1999 the Governors at Sevenoaks decided that we would become an all IB Sixth Form school by September 2006. A-levels would continue to be offered to those already in the school when the decision was made, or had already accepted a place for September 2000. By July 2006 the last pupils entitled to the choice had left, so in September 2006 all 440 Sixth Form pupils were studying for the IB Diploma.

Time and experience appear to have vindicated the Governors' 1999 decision. Whilst the 'gold standard' value of A-levels continues to be challenged, the IB's reputation for rigour, balance and coherence has spread, and the school's IB results secure our leavers with places at our top universities.

Benefits

Raises the public profile of the school; attracts top students to school (especially those who apply for Sixth Form entry); secures places at top universities in UK and abroad; makes sixth form teaching and learning stimulating and rewarding.
