Database interface and content management system

Project description

We have recently installed a new School Information Management System (CMIS) but found the web-based interface very user unfriendly. So our ICT Department asked me what we wanted to do with all of the information that we had and wanted to input. We now have a system that has Intranet links to the information contained within the database, to bespoke applications (e.g. that hold information about rewards and punishments) and also to documents that are held centrally about pupils (such as Learning Support Information and Medical Information). In addition to this we have developed a Content Management system that links resources for the pupils and staff alike. The clever part is that using the database information, the links that appear on the intranet are bespoke to the user. i.e. the computer knows who is logged on and so only provides the information for that person.

Benefits

Pupils only are given the links that we want them to have and they are very easy to follow. Staff have access to all of their information easily and to information about any pupil in the school.

Communication is easier with options to email the pupil's tutor, teachers, etc. Using the intranet means that we can introduce new features without having to explain to staff what has changed.
