We undertook a complete revamping of our rewards and sanctions
system which, from consultation to implementation, took
two years to tailor exactly to our requirements and then
implement.
The need was initiated by the Common Room and staff, from
the start, had ownership.
All stakeholders were consulted and feedback received.
Staff wanted to avoid low level disruption in lessons; students
wanted more recognition for their achievements (particularly
middle achievers who often received least attention) and
the SLT saw the advantage in a model for initiating sustainable
change which could be used in other developments within
school.
There was considerable INSET time for training staff to
implement this scheme. Staff were consulted at every stage
in the development of the scheme.
Twelve months since implementation there have been marked
improvements in:
- student behaviour and dress code
- student motivation in lessons
- consistency of approach by staff
There is a clear structure for the rewards and sanctions.
The emphasis on the latter is very much about pupils making
the right choices and choosing to move themselves further
up the sanctions ladder.
This was very much a collaborative approach to implementing
change and following its success, a model which we are applying
to further changes.
