Independent learning project

Project description

This was launched in 2004-5 as a cross-curricular project for year 7, taking place in 3 weeks of the Spring Term and linking History, English, Art, RS and PSHE, with support from the Library and ICT.

The theme is the Medieval World and each department has produced challenging group tasks to look at Medieval topics from their own standpoints.

The project includes a whole day site visit to Helmsley Castle and Rievaulx Abbey.

In 2005-6 we added a development day for year 8 in the Summer Term, with other departments contributing.

Aims were to promote cross-curricular links and, above all, to promote independent learning skills and problem-solving for our pupils.

Benefits

  • Pupils - have enjoyed the projects and seem to have improved research and presentation skills.
  • Departments - have enjoyed working together in different ways and other departments (Music, Science) have contributed.

Overall it has stimulated many teachers to think about independent learning ideas and try them out in the classroom.
