New assessment and reporting system

Project description

As part of the integration process between our Boys' and Girls' schools we reviewed our assessment and reporting procedures. The existing procedures varied widely from one part of the school to another. We have adopted a model that builds on existing best practice. The system is hosted on our customised academic management package. In place of effort and attainment grades, we have adopted a system in which teachers grade Punctuality with work, Quality of work, and Attitude and motivation (PQA), which is then graded on a numerical 1-5 basis. For GCSE and AS/A2 exam years a target grade is also shown. These are established using Yellis/Alis as a baseline, adjusted (usually upwards) after teacher- pupil discussion. Teaching staff then indicate whether current performance matches the standard required for that grade. Targets can be adjusted if appropriate. The process operates on a half term basis. Summary sheets are sent to parents, whilst in school pastoral staff discuss progress and targets with pupils individually.

Benefits

The scheme was introduced this year and is proving eminently workable. The new system provides greater precision in reporting different aspects of a pupil's performance. Elements of subjectivity inevitably remain, but it appears to be delivering greater consistency than previously. The scheme should be informative, meaningful and useful to parents, pupils and teaching staff in monitoring progress and reporting performance
