Downside - Writhlington Link

Project description

(2006 project - with Govt. Funding): The best pupils from year 10 in Science and Maths from each school are grouped together. There are five groups, 1 Downside pupil with 2 from Writhlington in each (15 pupils in all). During the Spring Term 2006 they studied a Mathematics topic. Summer: Chemistry, Autumn: Physics, and Spring 2007: Biology. They are given extended topics using an e-learning package and they can communicate with each other about the topics using e-mail. The desired outcome is that the "discussions" will cascade down to other pupils. It is hoped that the number of top grades at GCSE for Maths and Science (particularly at Writhlington) will increase and that the take-up at A level will thus improve.

The link between the schools has been in existence for a number of years.

Downside has allowed students from Writhlington to join AS/A sets at Downside for Maths Science and languages. PE has in the past been run jointly. Downside CCF staff have set up a CCF contingent at Writhlington.

Benefits

Results of the 2006 project are awaited (May 2006). Writhlington pupils already study Sciences at Downside with the Downside pupils and staff because Writhlington cannot fund the science A levels. By increasing the Science and Maths take up at A level, it is hoped that Writhlington will attract sufficient students to be able to run their own A/AS Science Courses.
