Teaching & learning (classroom practice)

Our core business - a collaborative experience

Project description

A Learning and Teaching group was established by teachers which had already galvanised the school into rethinking styles of teaching and how to respond to the different learning styles of students. When an opportunity arose to reorganise the management structure a new deputy head post was created with the remit "Learning and Teaching". Associated with the promotion of innovative practice in the classroom, the postholder is responsible for tracking pupil progress across departments - management directed specifically at developing the best teaching and learning.

"Active" and "Collaborative" learning have been the major focus for the school. Inset has highlighted and shared good practice. Classroom observations with colleagues from other departments promoted cross-curricular insights. Expertise has been shared in after-school workshops run by teachers with specific interests and expertise.

The delivery of study skills to S3-6 (Years 10-13) includes refresher "clinics" enabling students to access help with essay writing, revision skills and exam stress management. Pupils and parents have access to these generic study skills in the pupil diary and through the website.

A Student Learning Council allows students to contribute and is a source of new ideas e.g. the suggestion that teachers wear a clip-on microphone, record the lesson and put it on the students' server, giving them access to the discussion as well as the notes.

Benefits

Students recognise that they are part of the learning process and can contribute to the development of teaching. Parents are able to access much of the information and materials on-line to play their part. Teachers welcome the support of each other and recognise the school's investment in and emphasis on our "core business".
