Thinking skills and De Bono strategies in the 6th form

Project description

As an innovative school, we are constantly looking to enhance our students' learning experience. As well as excellent exam results, students need the skills and self-belief to think for themselves and to learn independently

The research aimed to identify and measure the effect of six separate teaching strategies on Understanding, Thinking (cf Bloom's Taxonomy - applying, synthesising, evaluating, etc.) and Enjoyment. The six strategies (3 De Bono, 3 of our own invention) were used over a six-week period. Student feedback, both qualitative and quantitative, was recorded through questionnaires and interview.

The impact was overwhelmingly positive. Students learnt more and were more confident and motivated. They echoed many of the benefits De Bono himself has linked to the tools:

  • They are a "deliberate" and "systematic" approach to thinking
  • They provide a common language across all subjects
  • They enable you to create better ideas more quickly
  • They provide a conceptual framework which is transferable to other activities (eg university applications)

Benefits

Pupils: exposure to a range of teaching techniques, taught transferable skills Teachers: reflective practice, collaborative teaching, sharing of ideas School: provided a real mandate to pursue a Thinking Skills programme and has reinforced our culture of continuous improvement.
