The Work contact scheme (Careers)

Project description

To ensure every pupil develops an awareness of their long term opportunities along with the ability to research and progress those opportunities, the Dulwich College Careers Department has devised a programme for Year 11 pupils and their parents, that continues for as long as pupils and alumni require.

The foundation is laid during five Year 11 lessons taught in PSHE. Students are shown how to identify a personal interest or ambition and thoroughly research a related Career area. The activity is brought to life through the tangible application of securing a visit or work placement to/with a professional in the field.

The placements and visits provide pupils with their first experiences of how their interests and abilities could be applied and utilised in the world beyond education, but also demonstrate to students the relevance of their current studies. Students are encouraged to develop continuing links with their hosts and to visit other hosts during their time in the Upper School. They often invite their contacts to speak at Societies; include examples from their visits in academic work; secure holiday and gap year employment and develop ideas for degree course choice and long term aspirations.

The continuing nature of the programme ensures that students maintain contact with the school after their departure and eventually return as employers themselves to offer help to the next generation
