Year 7 and 8 "Activities"

Project description

Year 7 and 8 curriculum was too heavy and we felt we were overloading them at too early an age. Two term compulsory rugby for all in years 7 and 8 severely limited games opportunities in the school, but the games staff insisted it was essential.

We introduced a double period on Friday for year 7 and Monday for year 8 in which they could opt for a range of constructive "hobby" type activities. Football and hockey went some way to relieving the compulsory two term rugby for all in the first two years. Golf, ice skating, tennis, climbing, performing arts (run by music and drama depts together), desk-top publication, ceramics, photography, cricket skills, chess, distance running, hiking and multi-sports have all been included. There is scope for more.

Boys have asked can it be extended to year 9 - sadly no.

Benefits

  • A happier and perhaps healthier lower school. They now have 2 hours games, 40 mins PE and 1 hour 20 of Activities as well as countless rugby matches
  • A wider games programme. Boys who have never been taught skills in cricket, football, hockey or chess now have the opportunity
  • Better teacher-pupil relationships
  • More motivation to study in academic lessons
  • More expensive on staff time
  • Surprisingly no grumbles about subjects losing teaching time
