We have been developing a culture of literature as a common
theme for all by running literature festivals annually to
coincide with the literature festival in Bath.
We have used a variety of events to share the focus with
as many people as possible:
- a 48 hour Readathon during which The Lord of the Rings
was read by the children, staff , parents, members of
the public, the mayor and MP for Bath and also a variety
of authors such as Tracy Chevalier;
- a poetry competition open to all junior and prep schools
throughout the South West which bought in hundreds of
entries; Conn Iggulden, a Head of English before becoming
an author, handed out the prizes;
- a Shakespeare forum for our sixth form English and Drama
students, in which we had a panel of Shakespeare experts,
both academic and acting, to run a Question and Answer
session.
Future forums will include a Gothic and a War theme, as
they proved so successful in getting relevant information
to students. The classic author visit is always popular
with both children and adults alike. This should never be
under estimated in helping encouraging reading in all ages.
