The week-long Sixth Form Festival just before the Autumn
half-term has been a very popular tradition at The Leys
for over 20 years. Getting to know what Cambridge has on
offer culturally is important for our 16-year-olds, many
of whom are new to us that term.
The Festival is an opportunity for these pupils to experience
the concerts, plays, shows, museums and galleries that Cambridge
has to offer but also in-school to attend seminars, workshops
and exhibitions all from late afternoon through each evening.
So the work load is lightened for those who opt to join
in (we do not make them - it's against the spirit of the
Festival). There is also a key-note lecture to start the
week and it is rounded off with a thought-provoking film
and a reception for the UVI.
The Committee comprises members of the Common Room who
bring their talents, interests and contacts to bear on providing
a varied and interesting programme with planning starting
in the previous Spring. Last year we had such events as:
learning to juggle, a String Quartet, Cambridge Footlights
and a lecture entitled 'Pascal's Fire'. Nowadays pupils
sign up for events via the intra-net which allows the Committee
to keep track on tickets and numbers.
Many pupils attend well over 15 different events in the
week out of a huge array of over 40. Our senior pupils really
appreciate this week and will often refer to it for months
to come.
