The Myriad Jazz Project was launched in September 2005
at Liverpool College. It provides an opportunity for young
people in the city, no matter where they go to school, to
explore jazz. The College employs an experienced teacher
and jazz practitioner, Tim Harvey, to lead the project and,
following the structured programme he has devised, promising
youngsters work together to develop the essential skills
of the genre, particularly the art of improvisation.
Directed at the 11-18 age group, the Myriad currently has
15 members but has a projected size of 30 students and 3
members of staff. Talented musicians are accepted onto the
Project after an informal audition where the emphasis is
on potential and enthusiasm. In 2005 the Myriad Jazz Project
was awarded an Arts Council grant of £16,000, and the first
Liverpool College Jazz Scholarship was awarded to an 11
year-old trumpet player.
The Project is based at Liverpool College; the College
has adequate space for rehearsal and for performance and
makes no charge for hire of the facilities.
The Myriad Jazz Project is a sister enterprise to The Myriad
Theatre Company which was founded in 2001 and exists to
provide a rigorous professional theatre experience. A non-profit-making
company, again established by Liverpool College, it currently
holds auditions twice a year, open to anybody living in
the Merseyside area aged between 11 and 18. This experience
is not available anywhere else in Merseyside
