Towards a more sustainable school

Project description

The initiative, which is student-run, aims to educate our community to become more sustainable and to educate for responsible attitudes towards the earth's resources and to help develop good practices.

Following the Eco-Schools' framework, we have undertaken an Environmental Review of the school, developed an Action Plan and, to date, have implemented numerous projects to reduce waste. These include a system for managing paper and an energy conservation project in collaboration with the Carbon Trust.

We have also been working with other schools and organisations to help share and develop good practices including the local council, Batheaston Primary School, and World AIMS (World Action in Methodist Schools). We are developing an environmental section of our school website to encourage communication with schools worldwide.

Students have successfully involved the whole community, including teaching and non-teaching staff, SMT, governors and parents, by means of assemblies, presentations, articles, etc. For example, the Maintenance Department have worked with students to implement energy saving schemes and a governor gave a well-received talk on Bio diesel to science students. Students have persuaded governors to incorporate education for sustainable development in our mission statement.

Benefits

To pupils: Pupils respond enthusiastically to environmental issues which they see as relevant and feel empowered to help. Projects encourage inclusion as all interested can contribute regardless of ability. Education for sustainable development lends itself to cross-curricular links.

To the school: Working together on environmental projects has developed good relationships within the school community. Potential financial savings are considerable: the Carbon Trust estimates we could save over £80,000 per year by reducing our energy costs alone. The outcome of many projects has generated positive publicity for the school.

To others: By working with members of the wider community, we have been able to share good practices and learn from each other.
