The School Forum

Project description

This is a committee formed to ensure that all pupils in the School (Years 9 - 13) have a 'voice' in decision-making and School development.

The School Prefects, (a group of twelve pupils in Year 13, from all Houses in the School) lead the meeting, the Head Boy/Girl in the Chair. Each year group in each of the seven Houses elects one representative from its number. This gives a further group of 28.

The Head of Boarding, Deputy Head and a resident House Tutor attend, in an advisory role only.

The agenda is drawn up in advance of the meeting, and representatives speak to the items proposed by their peers in the House. The Prefects reply and discussion ensues. The Head and Deputy Head Prefects then report back to the Deputy Head and to the Headmaster, and they write the minutes of the meeting.

There are two meetings each term, and two sets of representatives elected each School Year.

Benefits

(To pupils, school, others) The pupils know that they are heard and that their ideas are considered seriously. Changes which benefit the pupils are seen to be initiated by the pupils. Objections can be explained in detail by the Prefects, and, if necessary, by the staff present.

Prefects gain experience in compiling an agenda, writing minutes, arguing a case.

Younger pupils gain an opportunity to practise speaking in public and arguing their corner within a supportive group.

The School is able to reflect the views of a wide constituency and to develop boarding.

As Health and Safety is a standing agenda item, the pupils' valuable input in this area is gained.
