Improving Prefect Training

Project description

For some time the prefects at Merchiston take over their duties towards the end of the previous Summer term. To prepare for this all members of the Lower Sixth take part in a carousel of visits to all Houses (we have a horizontal system) spending 5-6 weeks covering duties in various Houses.

Potential prefects are also subject to quite a rigorous appointment process involving assessment (training weekends) in the Scottish Highlands, the need to pull together quite a detailed c.v. and letter of application, and the knowledge that each Deputy Head of House (prefect) is detailed to keep a log of their performance over the period of their attachment. Once they enter the Upper Sixth we try, through a serious of training seminars, to 'dry run' a number of likely critical scenarios. Most of these are based on real school issues from a year or two previous, and it amazing how each year the prefects are baffled how younger pupils get themselves into such parlous situations - conveniently forgetting that they are the subject of the case review!

Benefits

(to pupils, school, others)
