Partnerships with primary schools

Norfolk Oxbridge Access (NOA) summer school

Liaison between the Chemistry at KEQMS department and primary schools in Lytham has been taking place for the last four years.

The National Curriculum for Science includes, at KS2 a number of elements that are best taught through 'hands on' practical work. Our partner schools are not equipped with the laboratory facilities necessary to deliver this aspect of science in an interactive manner. The schools are keen to take part in the liaison because it specifically addresses the KS2 Science Curriculum.

Small groups of students from each primary school spend an afternoon in the KEQMS laboratories where they engage in practical activities; extracting salt from rock salt, using the ICT facility to find out uses of salt and performing a number of experiments with acids, rocks, milk and yeast all of which help them to distinguish between reversible and irreversible reactions.

The visiting students take home a sample of the salt they have extracted, a colour photograph showing them working in the laboratory, a workbook of questions based on the practical work and a memorable experience! We provide each primary school with a CD ROM about the activity, which includes a selection of photographs of the students working in the laboratory, which they can put onto their school network.
