Initially, the project involved a partnership with the
15 local primary schools who form the Loughborough Consortium.
Each school could send up to four Year 6 pupils to a two
hour Maths class on Saturday mornings (classes held monthly
at the Grammar School). The project has proved so successful
that it has been extended to a wider range of primary schools
and each session is delivered twice. About 60-70 pupils
attend each class.
The classes are run by members of the Maths Department
at Loughborough Grammar School - one teacher runs the class
and at least 5 other teachers and up to 10 Sixth formers
also attend to assist. The classes are not linked to any
syllabus or National Curriculum targets - they are meant
to be challenging but fun. In some years, primary teachers
(even headteachers!) have attended but this aspect of 'partnership'
has not worked as well as we had hoped.
The motivation for the classes is to stretch able pupils
and to raise their confidence in, and enjoyment of, mathematics.
