School Profile

Since its foundation in 1958, The British School of Barcelona has been a leading independent school characterised by the pursuit of academic excellence as well as the importance attached to the personal and social development of each and every child.

BSB is an inclusive three-form entry school with over 1,000 pupils aged 3–18, and it is officially recognised as a British School Overseas. Ensuring the quality of teaching and learning is at the heart of what we do, and this means making it possible for all children to realise their potential, including those with special needs as well as exceptionally able students who must be stretched and challenged.

Our school is an authorised centre for both Cambridge International and EDEXCEL examinations. We emphasise effective learning and, year after year, our students obtain excellent exam results which are well above national and international averages. This is reflected in the university offers our pupils receive, ranging from Cambridge and Imperial to other top colleges in the UK, America, Spain and Switzerland, among other countries.

In addition to academic learning, another pillar of our school is the Enrichment Programme, involving assemblies, tutorials, societies, sport, art, music, drama, trips and exchanges, leadership schemes and community work. These co-curricular activities clearly enrich a young person’s all-round experience and contribute to the attainment of a happier, more fulfilling life. They also enhance our pupils’ critical thinking, public-speaking skills and international awareness at the same time as they reward initiative and intellectual curiosity.

We cater for an international community living in the Barcelona area and we have over 40 nationalities represented at school. While BSB follows the English National Curriculum as an educational establishment fully accredited by the British Government, we also meet the requirements of the Spanish curriculum for foreign schools in Spain, which involves the study of Spanish and Catalan language and culture.

The school is in an ideal location in the vicinity of Barcelona, and next door to important sports facilities such as the Olympic Canal, Andrés Gimeno Tennis Club and Granvia Mar Sports Centre. Our school buildings were all designed to suit the particular needs of specific year groups, and we have recently added a two-storey library, a large dining hall, a theatre with a capacity of 380 seats and new sports courts.

BSB is a dynamic community where boys and girls are encouraged to strengthen their own beliefs and opinions, and also to show enough flexibility to bridge the gap between different cultures. They are empowered to stand on their own two feet while they remember that many other children are not as lucky as they are.
