Christ’s College is one of New Zealand’s oldest schools, and also one of its most progressive. With a roll of 610 (150 boarders and 460 dayboys) we are an independent, Anglican school for boys from Year 9 to Year 13.
The College has an impressive academic record with the majority of boys going on to tertiary study. The academic success can be attributed partly to our process of assessing, then meeting the needs of each boy, and maintaining a close eye on his ongoing level of achievement. While the Housemaster has ultimate responsibility for the welfare of the boys within his house, each teacher at Christ’s College also has the role of Tutor in which he/she monitors the academic progress and wellbeing of a group of 6 or 7 boys.
Christ’s College understands that good teaching and learning is not about assessment, it is about classroom connectedness, and capable, inspiring teachers. Our teachers have a common desire to develop in boys a passion for learning that will endure.
Practical work is valued in all subjects both in the classroom and laboratory as well as on numerous field trips. Learning is enhanced across the curriculum with the integration of state-of-the-art information and communication technologies. Study materials are available online, 24 hours a day, and the research resources of the College library are also easily accessible. The College offers excellent programmes for extension and enrichment, and extra tuition if needed.
Beyond the classroom, we place emphasis on maximum participation in the numerous extra-curricular options that are available. In sport, drama and music our boys are expected to give their best and encourage and support others to do the same. Friendly rivalry between Houses in the numerous inter-house competitions, enhances the esprit de corps for which College is renowned.
While the Housemaster will be the most significant figure in a boy’s life at College, the support and pastoral care offered within the House system includes Tutors, the Chaplain, Guidance Counsellor and the Headmaster.
Throughout its long and rich history, Christ’s College has maintained its foundation in Christian values, insisting its boys live lives underpinned by honesty, a love of learning, respect, spirituality, justice and compassion. Our Chaplain guides the spiritual life of the school, following the broad ethos of Anglicanism, and recognising the multi-denominational environment that exists in the community.
