Welcome to the HMC Autumn Conference 2019
I am delighted to welcome you to this year’s HMC Autumn Conference at the Intercontinental Hotel at the O2 and where we shall be celebrating our 150th anniversary.
The Conference starts on Monday 30th September, with the Opening Address at 1.30 pm. I have packed out the first day with a variety of speakers, from Clare Balding to Robert Plomin, flowing pretty much straight into pre-dinner drinks, followed by dinner. I would encourage you all to attend the drinks and dinner. The tables are being set up on a concourse with spectacular views over the Thames and the City and there are a variety of bars, again with amazing views.
I have arranged for a Maritime History specialist, Dr Sam Willis, to fly up from Devon to start Tuesday off with a Maritime History lesson at 9.00 a.m! It may be that some of you are already up to speed on your Maritime History but for those of you who would like to hear about Jutland 1916 and Maritime London ahead of the dinner at the National Maritime Museum on Tuesday evening, then this is for you. I am delighted that Mark Thompson will then speak to us followed by a Question Time session hosted by Sir Anthony Seldon.
After the workshops and lunch, you have some free time. There are many interesting activities in Greenwich, or you might like to walk over the O2 building. Prior to dinner at the Maritime Museum, we have our Annual Service in the Old Royal Naval College Chapel. The Chapel has one of Britain’s finest eighteenth-century interiors and the RGS/GHS choir will be singing at the service.
The Divisional Meetings are on Wednesday morning, followed by the AGM. We are then focusing on Leadership, with sessions run by Andy Buck and Elke Edwards.
I look forward to seeing you there.
