Abingdon School announces new Headmaster

The Chairman of Governors of Abingdon School, Adrian Burn, today announced the appointment of Michael Windsor to succeed Felicity Lusk as Head of the School from September 2016.  Michael has enjoyed notable success at Reading Blue Coat School where he will have been Headmaster for eight years prior to starting at Abingdon.

Since the announcement in March of Felicity Lusk’s wish to retire at the end of the Summer Term 2016, the governors have been heavily engaged in recruiting a successor and, not surprisingly, we attracted an outstanding list of candidates to succeed her.

I am delighted to tell you that, with effect from September 2016, the new Head of Abingdon School will be Mr Michael Windsor.

Mike Windsor has, since September 2008, been Head of Reading Blue Coat School, where he has made a significant impact on all aspects of school life and overseen a period of considerable development. Reading Blue Coat School is an independent day school of around 750 pupils; boys aged 11-18 and girls in the Sixth Form.

Mike was educated at Bristol Cathedral School and subsequently at the University of Durham where he got a first class degree in German with French.

Having taught English at the British School in Italy for a couple of years, Mike completed his PGCE at the Institute of Education in London. He was appointed as a teacher of Modern Languages at the highly selective King’s College School, Wimbledon, in 1996 and was subsequently appointed to the Senior Management Team in 2000.

In 2003 Mike was appointed Deputy Head of the Royal Grammar School in Guildford, another very selective school, where he remained until his appointment at Reading Blue Coat School.

Mike is 46 and married to Shanti and they have two daughters, Amelia and Bea, aged 13 and 10.  He is an accomplished musician who previously played the double bass with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and professional jazz and classical ensembles. Mike played university and club rugby and now takes his exercise swimming and cycling.

A former Chairman of the South Central division of HMC (the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference), Mike now serves on the HMC Academic Policy Committee and is currently Chairman of the Society of Heads.

We are all extremely fortunate in securing Mike as our next Head. He is an outstanding individual who will provide leadership and promote excellence in all that Abingdon represents.

Michael Windsor, currently Headmaster of Reading Blue Coat School, was born in Bristol. He attended Bristol Cathedral School, where he was a chorister, before going to Durham University where he achieved a First in German with French. After university he worked briefly in publishing before leaving for Bologna in Italy where he taught English as a Foreign Language for three years. Upon his return to the UK, Mike took a PGCE at the Institute of Education in London.

His first teaching job in the UK was as a teacher of Modern Languages at King’s College School, Wimbledon, where he later became Director of the International Baccalaureate. At KCS, he coached the 2nd XV, as well as hockey and athletics. He was an officer in the CCF and led expeditions to Ecuador, Morocco and Pakistan. He subsequently moved to be Deputy Head of the Royal Grammar School in Guildford for five years before being appointed as Headmaster of Blue Coat in 2008.

He holds an MA in Modern German Studies from Birkbeck College, University of London, is an inspector for the Independent Schools Inspectorate and is a governor at two schools.

Mike is married to Shanti, who works at Reading University, and they have two daughters, aged 13 and 10. An enthusiastic rugby player in his youth, Mike now enjoys swimming and cycling. Music is his other great passion, and he plays the double bass in classical and jazz ensembles.
