BBC3 documentary Uncovering rape culture statement

An HMC spokesperson said;

The accounts of sexual harassment outlined in the BBC documentary are shocking and need to be taken incredibly seriously. HMC schools have worked very closely with the Department for Education, Ofsted and ISI, safeguarding authorities and their local police forces to address the issues of harassment and misogyny, which exist everywhere, not just in schools.

HMC schools have taken action to address the many issues raised in the documentary and there are many fantastic examples across our membership of innovative approaches, often student-led, delivering change.

Safeguarding is an integral part of our schools’ culture and sex and relationships education has never received more prominence. Pupil voice is actively sought and encouraged and our schools and colleges are regulated and inspected on a regular basis.

The documentary highlights how this problem exists across society, not just in schools, and we would urge all institutions, organisations and authorities, especially schools and others responsible for the young, to take greater ownership of the potential solutions.
