The Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference (HMC) has announced that its Chairman for 2017/18 is Chris King, Headmaster of Leicester Grammar School. Chris was Chair of the HMC Professional Development Committee from 2009-2014, an HMC full board member since 2006, and HMC Chairman in 2015/16.
"I am delighted to have another opportunity to lead such a strong and independent group of heads at the top of their professional game, " said Mr King.
"HMC has made excellent progress in demonstrating the good the independent sector can bring to education in the U.K. And I hope my previous experience will help us add further value in the coming months."
The original plan was for last year’s Chair-Elect, Headmaster of Bedales Keith Budge, to be this year’s Chairman, having been elected in 2015. Keith subsequently decided to retire as Headmaster in Summer 2018, by which time he will have been in post for 17 years.
As his role as HMC Chairman would have coincided with his final year at Bedales, the Bedales School governors requested that Keith resign from the HMC role in order to dedicate his time to the management of the transition to his successor at Bedales, Magnus Bashaarat, which he agreed to do.
Keith Budge will continue to serve as organiser of the 2017 HMC Annual Conference in Belfast on 2-5 October, convening an excellent and stimulating conference programme.
