The Governors of the Fettes Trust are pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Geoffrey Stanford as the new Headmaster of Fettes College; succeeding Michael Spens, who has been Headmaster at Fettes since 1998. Geoffrey Stanford will take up his position in August 2017, the 10th Headmaster at Fettes in the 150 years of the College’s history.
Geoffrey Stanford is an inspiring appointment. He brings to Fettes a rare and outstanding combination of achievements and experience from both the academic and the business world. The breadth of Mr Stanford’s activities bears testimony to his resourceful, resilient and caring character; he is a team player who seeks to make the most of every opportunity, both for himself and for others.
Geoffrey Stanford is currently Deputy Head in charge of the Co-Curricular programme at Sevenoaks School in Kent, one of the top IB schools in the UK. He was educated at Eton, where he received an Oppidan scholarship before going on to read Classics at St Hugh's College, Oxford. He served as a Captain in the Grenadier Guards and has worked for both The Boston Consulting Group and Citigroup. He also holds an MBA from INSEAD.
Since leaving the city for education he has taught Economics, Business Studies and Latin. He started teaching at Millfield School before spending nearly six years as a Boarding Housemaster and Head of Department at Pangbourne College. He has also served as a Governor of an ‘Outstanding’ state secondary school and is currently a Governor of The Dragon School in Oxford.
Geoffrey Stanford has a wide range of interests and experiences. He has rowed for Eton, Sandhurst and the British Army at Henley, completed the Marathon des Sables and Devizes to Westminster canoe race, and taken part in a succession of expeditions to the Himalayas, including leading an international team to the summit of Mount Everest. He also enjoys playing the French horn. He is married to Susanna and they have two young sons.
"I am delighted Geoffrey Stanford has agreed to become the next Headmaster of Fettes College. We carried out a rigorous and extensive recruitment process, which included looking outside the UK. Michael Spens has been an outstanding Headmaster over the last 19 years, overseeing an extensive development programme for the College.
In appointing Geoffrey Stanford we believe he will build on this legacy and will initiate an exciting new chapter in the history of the College. In today's world the combination of his academic and business experience makes him an ideal appointment. He will maintain a school environment that enables young people to make the most of themselves through embracing every opportunity to learn and develop in the broadest sense and will further extend the ways in which Fettes supports and benefits the wider community." The Hon Lord Tyre CBE, Chairman of The Governors of the Fettes Trust
‘’It is excellent news that Geoffrey and Susanna Stanford have been appointed to succeed Debbie and me in August 2017. We wish them every success and hope that they will be as happy at Fettes as we continue to be.” Mr Michael Spens, Headmaster of Fettes College
“I am delighted for Geoffrey, and also for Fettes, which as a fellow IB school, has a certain kinship with Sevenoaks. Congratulations to the Governors on an excellent appointment.” Dr Katy Ricks, Head of Sevenoaks School
“I am delighted and honoured to have been invited to lead this remarkable school. I have been particularly struck by the warmth and energy of its community. I am looking forward with great excitement to helping pupils from all walks of life benefit from the opportunities of an education at the College, building on the excellent work of Michael Spens.” Mr Geoffrey Stanford
Michael Spens will continue to provide strong leadership for Fettes College, as he has done throughout his tenure as Headmaster, until his retirement at the end of August 2017.
