Haileybury Appoints New Master

Martin Collier 1Haileybury, a leading co-educational boarding school near Hertford, announced today the appointment of the new headmaster (known as the Master). He is Martin Collier, currently Headmaster of St John’s in Leatherhead, an independent co-educational boarding and day school. Martin will take up his role at Haileybury in September 2017, following the retirement of the current Master, Joe Davies.

Commenting on Martin’s appointment, Haileybury's Chairman of Governors, Michael Gatenby said: “I am delighted that Martin will be leading our Haileybury community from September 2017. He impressed our selection panel with his ambition to deliver an exceptional, fully-rounded education for our pupils and a stimulating environment for all our staff”. Michael continued: “Martin intends to build on Joe Davies’ legacy, where every pupil is actively encouraged to exceed their expectations, blossom academically and grow into confident, adaptable and generous individuals.”

Haileybury has such a rich heritage, strong academic record, great co-curricular provision and fabulous pastoral care. It will be a real privilege to be part of Haileybury's special community and nurture our young people to become confident individuals who are willing to contribute their talents in the service of others.”

Martin graduated with an MA in Modern History from Oxford University. He is currently Headmaster of St John’s School Leatherhead and before that was Second Master at Oundle. Under his leadership academic standards at St John’s have risen and the co-curricular life of the School has flourished. Martin currently serves as Vice-Chair of the HMC Academic Policy Sub-Committee and has played an important role in effecting positive change in the national examinations system and curriculum. He is an author and editor of numerous history text books.

Haileybury is an independent co-educational boarding school for 11-18 year olds. It is located at Hertford Heath, near Hertford, about 20 miles north of London and is based on a beautiful 500 acre campus. Haileybury was opened in 1806 as the training college for the East India Company and then closed down in 1858. It re-opened as an independent boarding school for boys in 1862.  It accepted its first girls into the Sixth Form in 1973 and today is fully co-educational. There are 757 pupils in the school.
