In the Autumn edition of Attain magazine, Dr Tim Hands, Vice Chairman of HMC and Master of Magdalen College School, offers advice for parents on how to choose a senior school for your child.
In the article, Dr Hands discusses the various ways of choosing schools (league tables, school guides, magazines, prospectuses, websites and educational experts) and summarises that there is only one good way of doing it, and it's surprisingly too often neglected....
So the right person to decide is the child. Children have a unique sense about a school. If they go there and they like it they will never be wrong; if they go there and they don't like it, then nothing said by any adult should ever be deployed to make them change their mind. Parents endlessly agonise over whether their child will fit in, but all independent schools are brilliant at getting new pupils to settle in well, as if they weren't they wouldn't still be in business.
