The Times, 05/05/2014: In an opinion piece for the Times, HMC Chairman Tim Hands (Magdalen College School) says "the vogue for imagining a 'Berlin wall' between state and private schools is deeply unhelpful." He writes: "First coined by Lord Adonis and recently adopted by Michael Gove, it portrays independent schools as perpetuators of social division, firmly set against social mobility and integration. This is untrue and unfair.
"In one way, however, the Berlin wall image is historically apt. On one side was freedom, especially from state control; on the other was an inefficient and intrusive state."
