SIR – Any analysis based on school type should be treated with suspicion. Lazy generalisations about “wealthy applicants from fee-paying schools” do little to advance the argument.
At my own independent school, more than 10 per cent of pupils in the Lower Sixth Form next September will have been recruited from pupil premium (free school meals) backgrounds on fully funded bursaries. In two years many will proceed to the best universities and thereafter rise, through diligence and application, to the top of their chosen professions.
Their achievements should be praised, rather than derided, by the Social Mobility and Child Poverty Commission.
