Day Schools

Nottingham High Sixth form pool snooker coed girl boy40% of HMC schools are day schools educating 180,000 pupils, 40% of all day students in independent schools in the UK*.

Most children attending HMC schools are day pupils. Day schools often have a local feel, drawing their pupils from a smaller radius and thereby being more connected to, and reflective of, their community.

Day schools have a fast pace of life, as they are typically trying to fit everything into the school day and this creates a distinct buzz. Modern day schools offer extra-curricular activities and sports traditionally associated with boarding so students can experience the holistic education of an independent school with out leaving home.

The range of HMC day schools is equally as diverse as those that offer boarding: co-educationalsingle-sex or “diamond”; rural or urban; outstanding in specialist areas, such as sport, music, art or drama; academically challenging and successful, but all with a sharp focus on the individual needs of each child.

The pace of day school life is one of several features that mirror life beyond school. Pupils at Latymer Upper School, Hammersmith, commute to school, often via tube, an experience which they tell me they enjoy! They have to balance their time and energy between home and school, which prepares them well for striking the right work/life balance later.

Fees and Financial Support

Day schools' fees are typically lower than those of boarding schools. Many schools have foundations and bursary schemes through which they are able to offer funded places to pupils who would benefit from an independent education, but whose parents are unable to afford the fees.
