As educators, we have the privilege and responsibility to guide children and young people on a path of self-discovery. This year’s Children’s Mental Health Week theme, “Know Yourself, Grow Yourself,” invites us to explore how self-awareness can become a cornerstone for resilience, growth, and development. At Fettes College, we believe that understanding oneself is not just a personal journey—it’s a community effort supported by families, schools, and wider networks.
Why Self-Awareness Matters
Self-awareness is the foundation of emotional intelligence. It enables young people to recognise their strengths, manage their emotions, and understand their impact on others. With these tools, they are better equipped to navigate challenges, build meaningful relationships, and make informed decisions. As part of our Personal, Social, Health and Emotional Education (PSHE) programme, we encourage students to reflect on their identities, values, and aspirations.
By fostering self-awareness, we aim to help children and young people understand that growth isn’t about perfection—it’s about progress and resilience. This mindset not only supports mental health but also empowers them to embrace opportunities with confidence.

Fettes College is passionate about equipping young people with the tools they need to thrive. Self-awareness is a lifelong journey, and we are honoured to walk alongside our students as they discover who they are and who they aspire to become.
As we celebrate Children’s Mental Health Week, let us renew our commitment to empowering the next generation to know themselves and grow themselves – and have the resilience, confidence, and self-belief to achieve their full potential.
