As educators, we have the privilege and responsibility to guide children and young people on a path of self-discovery. This year’s Children’s Mental Health Week theme, “Know Yourself, Grow Yourself,” invites us to explore how self-awareness can become a cornerstone for resilience, growth, and development. At Fettes College, we believe that understanding oneself is not just a personal journey—it’s a community effort supported by families, schools, and wider networks.

Why Self-Awareness Matters

Self-awareness is the foundation of emotional intelligence. It enables young people to recognise their strengths, manage their emotions, and understand their impact on others. With these tools, they are better equipped to navigate challenges, build meaningful relationships, and make informed decisions. As part of our Personal, Social, Health and Emotional Education (PSHE) programme, we encourage students to reflect on their identities, values, and aspirations.

By fostering self-awareness, we aim to help children and young people understand that growth isn’t about perfection—it’s about progress and resilience. This mindset not only supports mental health but also empowers them to embrace opportunities with confidence.

Supporting the Whole Child

At Fettes College, we are proud to offer a range of initiatives designed to nurture self-awareness and personal growth:

  • PSHE Curriculum: Our comprehensive PSHE programme covers vital topics of mindfulness, stress management, and positive digital footprints. Through interactive sessions, students explore their emotions, develop coping strategies, and build resilience.
  • Outdoor Learning Opportunities: Activities such as our Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programme encourage students to step out of their comfort zones and discover their strengths. Whether trekking through the Scottish Highlands or volunteering in local communities, these experiences help young people build confidence and self-reliance.
  • Diverse Co-Curricular Activities: From music and drama to sports and art, our co-curricular programme allows students to explore their passions and talents. Encouraging them to try new things fosters a growth mindset and strengthens their sense of identity.
  • The Fettes Wellbeing Hub: A dedicated space for mental health resources, the Wellbeing Hub provides students with access to tools and support that promote emotional resilience.

Practical Tips for Families

Parents and carers play a pivotal role in nurturing self-awareness in their children. Some strategies to encourage self-reflection and personal growth include:

  • Ask Open-Ended Questions: Prompt conversations with “What made you feel proud today?” or “What challenges did you overcome?”
  • Model Self-Awareness: Share your own reflections and growth experiences to normalise these discussions.
  • Encourage expression: Writing/Drawing/Doodling about their thoughts and feelings can help young people process emotions and track their growth.
  • Celebrate Effort Over Outcome: Praise perseverance and learning from mistakes to build resilience.
