St. Columba’s College is one of Ireland’s leading secondary schools and is particularly specialised in the provision of a high-quality boarding education for its pupils. Founded in 1843, and combining the best of traditional and modern architecture, the College occupies nearly 150 acres in the foothills of the Dublin mountains, overlooking Dublin Bay. Although the grounds have a rural ‘feel’, the College is only seven miles from the city centre and 30 minutes from the airport and principal rail and bus stations.

If you were to ask a Columban parent why they chose us for their son or daughter’s schooling, I believe they would tell you that pupils here are particularly happy, rounded and fulfilled because of the high quality of pastoral care which succeeds in combining the pursuit of academic excellence with an outstanding range of opportunities beyond the classroom.

With 300 boys and girls divided into seven Houses, we believe strongly in the virtues of being small. This extends to our classrooms where there is an average of 15 pupils in Forms I - III and 10 in Forms IV - VI. Our code of behaviour requires discipline on the part of our pupils but it is fair and, more important, agreed by all. We believe that being busy and stimulated in our daily lives is the best form of discipline and we stress the values of community respect and support for one another.

Our academic results are outstanding by any measure and the vast majority of our pupils continue their education at universities in Ireland, the UK and further afield. But getting pupils through examinations is not the most important thing about a Columban education. We organise six afternoons of sport for all pupils each week, around half our pupils learn a musical instrument here, and we stage about a dozen plays in the course of an academic year. Our pupils get regular opportunities to debate the issues of our time and public speaking is actively encouraged.
