In a rapidly changing world, we face the difficult challenges on how best to prepare our young people for life after school.
Recognising that each student is an individual is a positive first step.
A growing awareness of student debt, combined with the cost of living, and graduate employment challenges means university is not necessarily the right path for everyone.
To meet changing trends, other pathways must be considered, such as vocational routes, apprenticeships, gap years and direct entry into employment.
Financial success should not be the sole motivator for pursuing a particular career.
Young people should constantly be challenged, to guide them towards studying what they love and motivating them to excel in their passions.
Gordonstoun’s co-curricular education has range of activities, both inside and outside the classroom, designed to spark a ‘passion’ within students to steer them towards realising their dream career.
Whether it’s exploring archaeology on a remote Scottish island, going on a sailing expedition or supporting the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, pushing boundaries is key to unlocking skills or abilities a young person never realised they had.
Personalised learner profiles and support plans ensure that students are not only supported academically, but also feel safe, understood, and able to thrive.
By understanding a student’s strengths, weaknesses and personal situations it is easier to explore realistic career options and make informed decisions.

The world is full of opportunities. Encouraging students to explore international and spiritual citizenship demonstrates to them how they can make a difference with their actions and by supporting causes.
The mantra should be that ambition has no limits.
For some, the natural step is to aim for a university place. With structured and targeted support, studying for a Medicine degree, going to Oxbridge or heading to the US or another part of the world is a realistic target.
For other students, it may be apprenticeship programmes with Ernst & Young (EY) or DHL, to full-time employment as a firefighter.
In such a competitive jobs market, developing links and contacts with employers is now a necessity. Hands-on courses open doors, helping students to gain that real world experience.
Gordonstoun has recently introduced a deer management diploma, LANTRA‑accredited tractor and chainsaw courses, and the British Wool Board Blue Seal qualification in sheep shearing. For students with a rural background, this type of creative thinking offers a practical pathway to forging an agricultural career.
One of last year’s Gordonstoun leavers has just completed a challenging six-month contract on a 19,000-acre farm in New South Wales having gained the tractor qualification.
We are now living in a world where career support must go beyond the school gates. With job vacancies often attracting hundreds of applicants, the jobs market can be daunting.
Ongoing mentoring, with more sustained skills and networking support around the globe, offers welcome support for university students and those entering the Graduate jobs market, and for those choosing other career pathways.
After receiving guidance from an experienced alumni, a recent leaver with ambitions in drama gained valuable work experience on a Netflix film set, along with guidance for his application to the Royal Conservatoire Scotland.
As a British school located in Scotland, delivering an English curriculum alongside a highly international student body, Gordonstoun creates a unique environment for preparing young people to live and work in a diverse society. Students live alongside peers from a wide range of cultural and social backgrounds, and this daily experience builds empathy, respect, and understanding in a very real and meaningful way.
We see the impact of this in how students learn to navigate difference, build relationships, and develop a strong sense of identity. Having full confidence in that identity allows passions to thrive – and ultimately supports students in pursuing a happy and fulfilling career path.
