The success of students in school and in life beyond is influenced by the way they interact with the learning process and the opportunities they are given for progression and personal development. The curriculum lies at the heart of this, and so too does assessment. The way we examine determines to a large extent the way we teach. It influences what and how students learn, and the skills they develop.
This HMC report by Sarah Fletcher, High Mistress at St Paul’s Girls’ School and Chair of the HMC ‘Reform of Assessment’ Working Group, summarises the findings from an extensive survey of educators put into the field in the Summer of 2021.
The survey was completed by some 800 individuals, nearly 500 of whom are teachers and senior leaders working in both independent and state schools. In fact, the majority of those 500 teachers were from schools in the state sector.
Sarah Fletcher wrote the report with support from HMC many of its Heads and it has been well-received in the education sector.
