All members who have joined HMC since 2020 are invited to join this new members’ lunch, which offers an opportunity to meet friends and new colleagues, as well as members of senior staff from Head Office, Chairs of HMC Divisions, and members of HMC’s Professional Development Committee.

In 2023 history is front-page news. Long marginalised histories, most of them linked to Empire and Slavery, as being debated and contested as never before. While institutions across Britain, including many schools, are confronting their own uncomfortable pasts. And underpinning all of this is a deep gulf in attitudes between the generations. How can schools and teachers navigate through the history wars?

• 1. RSC workshop: Voice and Impact – This practical session will give participants the opportunity to hone their public speaking and communication skills through theatre-based techniques. The first half of the session will focus on exercises that help improve vocal health, tone and clarity, before exploring exactly what it is that makes a communicator deliver with “impact”.

• 2. RSC workshop: Creative Pedagogies – This session will focus on how the RSC’s rehearsal room approaches support a creative and critical engagement with cultural capital/literacy that raises moral and social questions to build cultural democracy. It will include dialogic exercises to expose and explore the expectations in the room around Shakespeare’s place on schools’ curricula. We will explore examples through practice of how creative and playful engagement with complex texts builds transferable skills and competencies of oracy and literacy. The session will focuson the openings of Twelfth Night and Hamlet; no prior knowledge needed (but welcomed).
