St Leonards Senior School educates pupils aged 12-16 in fully co-educational classes from Years 8-11 (S1-S4), with the option of boarding from Year 8 (S1). At the end of Year 11 (S4), all pupils sit GCSE examinations in a broad range of subjects.
These four years are not just about preparing for exams. We want the children to enjoy learning for its own sake, and to be spurred on by their own good results. Important organisational skills are developed as they get used to being taught by separate subject specialists in different classrooms.
We strongly believe in developing the potential of each individual, but we also believe in hard work and high standards, and in stretching the most able students to excel. Nearly all continue to the Sixth Form (S5 & S6) to study the highly respected International Baccalaureate Diploma.
Alongside their academic goals, Senior School students are encouraged to follow up their interests, pursue new ones and use their time to the full. We can give them exceptional opportunities in sport, music, art and drama and we also benefit from interacting with the community of St Andrews and its university. We want our students to acquire a work/leisure balance that gives them a head start in today’s challenging world.
